In the realm of contemporary design, where adaptability and human-centricity reign supreme, Thomas Bentzen stands as a master of thoughtful innovation. His creation for Muuto, the Linear System Series, is more than just a collection of tables, lighting, and accessories; it’s a testament to his philosophy of creating spaces that foster connection and belonging.
Bentzen’s journey began after honing his skills at Louise Campbell Studio, leading him to establish his own studio in 2010. His passion for creating “objects that are functional and simple, while satisfying a human need” has earned him international acclaim. As a co-founder of the design collective REMOVE, he’s consistently pushed the boundaries of design, always with a focus on durability and purpose.
The Linear System Series is a perfect embodiment of Bentzen’s design ethos. It addresses the evolving needs of modern workspaces, hospitality settings, and educational institutions by offering a highly configurable system. This isn’t just about filling a space with furniture; it’s about creating environments that adapt to the rhythms of human interaction.
“The Linear System Series places people at its center,” Bentzen explains. “Being a place to meet, to collaborate or to work in focused solitude. With its warm materiality and modern expression, the Linear System Series brings feelings of home into larger spaces to give the user a sense of belonging, even if being there only for a little while.”
This sentiment is evident in the series’ thoughtful features. The new slender High Table, for instance, caters to the need for flexible, spontaneous spaces, ideal for quick meetings or solo work sessions. Its sleek design and custom integrated power solution exemplify Bentzen’s commitment to functionality without sacrificing aesthetic appeal.
The introduction of the slimmed-down Linear System Table, with its 110cm width, further illustrates Bentzen’s understanding of human interaction. Designed for dialogue, its narrow surface encourages intimate discussions, making it a versatile addition to both large conference rooms and smaller offices.
But the Linear System Series goes beyond mere functionality. Through the clever use of accessories and lighting, Bentzen has created a system that allows for the creation of private atmospheres within larger spaces. This ability to carve out intimate zones for solo work or collaborative sessions is a hallmark of his design philosophy.
Bentzen’s perspective on Scandinavian design adds another layer to his work. “Scandinavian design has always been about honesty and functionality, comprised with poetry,” he reflects. “I like it that way. I think Scandinavian designers have succeeded in bringing their heritage into a time where we no longer stand next to the cabinetmaker, but are challenged and thrilled by new materials and new ways to produce.”
This blend of heritage and innovation is palpable in the Linear System Series. The warm materiality and modern expression create a sense of familiarity, while the configurable design and integrated power solution speak to the demands of contemporary life.
